Decisions, Decisions

One of the most important decisions I make each year is Halloween costumes for my family. I know some of our friends and neighbors are fine with just throwing on any old thing, but not Lah Lee.  I am well known for my “sexy” costumes every year, an idea which is kind of you neek to me, so I try not to disappoint my “fans” lol.

Last year I was a Real Housewife of Plymouth Colony. Hear ye, hear ye, I was smokin'!

Unfortunately, Hummus’s school considers Halloween a satanic holiday, so I won’t be getting him dressed up this year, unless we get invited to a fab party where the hostess insists we bring kids.

Merlin always thinks he wants to be something weird, but I usually just throw together a costume to go with Starling’s for him and he seems happy enough in the end.  No Merlin, you can not be Gandalf this year.  I don’t even know what that means!

I already purchased an adorable eagle costume for Starling.  It was very expensive and Cari wanted to get one for Amber too, but Starling said she no longer wants to be a bird of prey.

She says that her "friends" all want to go as cats! Cats? I think not!

I also ordered a Sexy Donald Trump costume for myself, because I wanted to be topical.  While the booty shorts fit like a dream, the top was neither form fitting nor low cut so I think I will donate it to the homeless shelter.

I think the Sexy Kim Davis costume is also "fired!"

I guess the Sexy Kim Davis costume is also “fired!”

We have less than three weeks until the big day and I still have no idea what I will be this year!

My Super-Star

The new program at school seems to be working out well for Starling.  She has not had a single incident of other children (or their parents!!!) bullying her about being a bully so far this year.  That darling Ms Cole seems to have really shut down that childishness, and Starling loves the drama club they have started for her.

As a matter of fact, the club is going to be putting on a mini-production of Annie (helpless lil’ girls being rescued by men is such a great model for our kiddos) and guess who is playing the starring role?  Hint: her name has the word “star” in it!

It is definitely not a hard luck life if you are brimming with talent and also have a dog who can perform.

A Bit of a Dilemma

I think all moms want the same things for their children.  We want them to be pretty and popular.  I felt like I had achieved this with my older two.  People always tell me that Merlin is a very handsome little boy (even though I can’t see it) and he is certainly very popular with his peers and with adults, despite being extremely nerdy and odd.  Of course Starling is stunning looking, and while she has never  had a large number of admirers, she makes up for that in the quality of her friends.  Starling naturally just attracts the prettiest and most socially prominent of her peers.

Since Merlin came home from camp this summer there have been changes in my lil’ girl.  First of all, she began playing with her brother…all of the time.  I don’t want to say this is a bad thing.  It keeps them both out of my hair for a large part of the afternoons, but it certainly can’t help her reputation to be so friendly with one of the children from the genius class.

It is like my big smalls are friends or something. Weird.

The part I am struggling with most however is Merlin’s friend Allie.  She has come over after school several times and she seems like a very sweet little girl.  It is hard to find a single speck of that horrible Fat Alice in this child.  Now Starling has started playing with her and this afternoon she asked to have her over even though Merlin was at soccer.  I offfered to go pick up Alcott or Amber or one of the other popular girls, but Starling said that she and Fat Alice, I mean Allie, were eating lunch together today and Fat Alice had an idea for a mystery club so they wanted to make a sign up sheet so everyone could join.  There is so much wrong with that idea.

When you look at Allie, there is nothing terribly wrong with her.  But won’t everyone always remember that she was once Fat Alice and wonder why Starling has an ugly unpopular friend?

This is why I am confused. She is no longer a fat mess.

I really don’t know what to do.

Poor, Poor Starling

On Wednesday I allowed Starling to wear a perfectly adorable dance costume to school and the school called to tell me it was “inappropriate”.  They said it was “too skimpy”.  I was busy at the gym when they called so they made her wear used gym sweats until I could get there to bring her something cute.  We were both beside ourselves.

As a treat I decided to make up a head shot for her so we can send it out to modeling agencies and she can become a super-model,  It cheered her right up!

The many faces of Starling; happy, funny and skinny!

Reunited…and it feels so good!

Cari and Amber got back last night from Burning Man.  Apparently it is very dusty there so she just tosses all of their clothes into a Goodwill donation box somewhere in Nevada.  Let that mess be the charity’s problem to deal with, and the poors will be the beneficiary of relatively nice clothing (she doesn’t bring anything really valuable to the playa).

She says Burning Man always reminds her about taking care of the earth and valuing our resources.  Such an important message!

Amber and Starling were delighted to be together at school today.  I am afraid this has been a rough week for Starling.  I hope the school can get these other children to stop their bullying her about being a bully!  I don’t know why they have separated her from her best friend.

They couldn't stop laughing about something Julia wore to school today. She thought it was cute but it was totally ridiculous.

Hummus had a wonderful first day of school I am sure.  He was asleep when I picked him up, he slept straight through the night and was still asleep when we pulled back into the parking lot this morning. I poked him and handed him a toaster pastry.  School time, lil’ buddy! He is wearing his Daniel Tiger underpants today.  Let’s hope they get a little more respect than poor Elmo got yesterday. ;(

Missing My Friend

I have been extrememly overwhelmed with setting up this event for the school faculty on Friday and I just wish Cari was here.  Last night I decided that Starling and I should try a lil’ camping on for size and see how it went.  Maybe next year we will be able to go to Burning Man too.  It has been going on for a few years, but it is just starting to catch on with the cooler crowd, and I know we would fit right in.

Starling had done a little camping trip with Röbert a few weeks back, but he says it did not go well, and neither one would talk about it.  I had Röb set up a tent and light a campfire in our yard for us and we went out to to cook our dinner in the wild.

We burned everything so it was romaine leaves for dinner, but that is our favorite meal anyway.

After dinner we went over near the window and tried to read lips on the tv.  It was so frustrating not to know what was going on!  We were so bored by 7:30 we decided to go to bed, but when we saw the ugly sleeping bags we both burst into tears.

It was a school night anyway!  It was really the right thing to go back inside, where we had lovely air-conditioning and there were no bugs and were able to take a long luxurious shower.  I am going to look into the most luxurious way to experience camping out in the future.

A Little Attention for Starling

I hate to say it, but I really felt like the school dropped the ball last year with our family.  All year long it was phone call after phone call about Merlin, “Oh hi, Lah Lee.  Merlin is winning another award on Thursday, can you possibly make it to the awards ceremony?  It would mean so much to him.”  Right.  He never even noticed that I wasn’t there, and my spin class would certainly have noticed if the pace leader was not in the front row!  All I ever heard about Starling were complaints that she was mean or complaints that she was picking on others.  I tried explaining to her teacher and the principal that Starling was actually the one being bullied.  The other kids, and even their parents, were all ganging up on her about being a bully, and it was so hard for her.

I was pleased earlier this week to get a phone call from Mrs. Swedburg, the principal, saying that she and Miss Cole, Starling’s teacher, would like to have a little sit down with me this morning to discuss the social aspects of Starling’s school year.  Finally!

I went in with a small list of things we needed from the school.  I feel strongly that Starling and Amber need to be in the same class, and that Starling needs more outlets for personal expression.  I was surprised that they actually had what they called a “plan of action”.  Apparently they have set up a special “social group” for Starling and she is going to meet with a special counselor twice a week to talk about her feelings.  While I am not pleased with all of the members of the “social group” (Fat Alice?  Really?)  I understand that they feel the need to be inclusive, and I think it will be fun for Starling to have the special attention of the counselor.

Miss Cole is also starting a theater group at the school, which will meet during lunches a couple of times a week, and she already had Starling on her list of participants.  How nice that they started a special club for my special girl.  I am sure all of the other attractive children will enjoy the opportunity to be on stage too!

When Starling got home this afternoon I told her all of the good news.  She said she hates Miss Cole and does not want to have any part of her dumb theater, but when I explained how it could eventually lead to Hollywood stardom, she was more excited.

Mommy! I am home!

Mommy! I am home!

I just have a feeling it is going to be a great year for my special lil’ angle!
