Cari and Amber got back last night from Burning Man. Apparently it is very dusty there so she just tosses all of their clothes into a Goodwill donation box somewhere in Nevada. Let that mess be the charity’s problem to deal with, and the poors will be the beneficiary of relatively nice clothing (she doesn’t bring anything really valuable to the playa).
She says Burning Man always reminds her about taking care of the earth and valuing our resources. Such an important message!
Amber and Starling were delighted to be together at school today. I am afraid this has been a rough week for Starling. I hope the school can get these other children to stop their bullying her about being a bully! I don’t know why they have separated her from her best friend.
They couldn’t stop laughing about something Julia wore to school today. She thought it was cute but it was totally ridiculous.
Hummus had a wonderful first day of school I am sure. He was asleep when I picked him up, he slept straight through the night and was still asleep when we pulled back into the parking lot this morning. I poked him and handed him a toaster pastry. School time, lil’ buddy! He is wearing his Daniel Tiger underpants today. Let’s hope they get a little more respect than poor Elmo got yesterday. ;(
I have been extrememly overwhelmed with setting up this event for the school faculty on Friday and I just wish Cari was here. Last night I decided that Starling and I should try a lil’ camping on for size and see how it went. Maybe next year we will be able to go to Burning Man too. It has been going on for a few years, but it is just starting to catch on with the cooler crowd, and I know we would fit right in.
Starling had done a little camping trip with Röbert a few weeks back, but he says it did not go well, and neither one would talk about it. I had Röb set up a tent and light a campfire in our yard for us and we went out to to cook our dinner in the wild.
We burned everything so it was romaine leaves for dinner, but that is our favorite meal anyway.
After dinner we went over near the window and tried to read lips on the tv. It was so frustrating not to know what was going on! We were so bored by 7:30 we decided to go to bed, but when we saw the ugly sleeping bags we both burst into tears.
It was a school night anyway! It was really the right thing to go back inside, where we had lovely air-conditioning and there were no bugs and were able to take a long luxurious shower. I am going to look into the most luxurious way to experience camping out in the future.
This morning, when I dropped by the school to tell some other parents what to do, I was asked by Miss Laphem, the school secretary, where Cari has been. The school has been trying to reach her and of course she is off the grid at Burning Man.
When I tried to explain how Burning Man was an amazing, conciousness raising event, Miss Laphem actually quite rudely interupted me and informed me that there was a PTO meeting in one hour. I was surprised. I thought that schedule of meetings was just a guideline, and Cari and I could say when and where we want to meet. Apparently not. I tried to explain how I had barre and then a luncheon with my book club and then cross fit and Miss Laphem replied, “Well then Cari had better get her ass home from Burning Man, hadn’t she.”
Wow. Just wow. I had no Idea Miss Laphem could be so spicy.
What else could I do? I ran home and changed into a more PTO vice presidential outfit and headed back. Thank God Krystyn was in charge of the agenda, because otherwise I would have been lost.
I was pretty late, but it is never too late for a selfie when you are wearing a cute new outfit.
It turns out that Cari and I were also supposed to be planning a party for the faculty this Friday. It is an annual event called “Second Friday”, although I am sure I can come up with something better, and when I was asked where it was going to be I had no idea and blurted out, “My house.” Oh dear. I guess I’d better call some caterers.
Cari and Amber are looking forward to their favorite event of the year, Burning Man! We sure will miss them, and Amber will miss the first couple of weeks of school, but it is such a wonderful educational opportunity for their family, and they wouldn’t miss it for the world.
Of course Starling wants to go with them.. She has been crying and complaining that she can’t start school without her lil’ buddy. I am not a camper and Röbert does not think Burning Man is a good use of our resources, so we will not be joining them this year. I suggested to Röbert that we shake Starling out of her funk by letting her experience camping with him. So the two of them set out for a Daddy-Daughter 3 day hike and camping trip early this morning. Starling was all dressed in festival wear, including some darling fringed boots.
I think the moment Röbert digs a hole in the woods and tells her that is her toilet, is the moment they will be heading home.
Of course that means that I am a single mom again. I don’t know how i do everything! I took the boys over to the park to do a little fishing today. I didn’t bait their hooks because, eeew, so there was no chance I would end up cleaning a disgusting fish, but it kept them occupied for a few hours so I could catch up with my friends at a semi-nearby picnic table.
He couldn’t figure out why nothing was biting. LOL! Who is the smart one now?
I did call the preschool about Hummus and the director was so rude. She said she hadn’t called me back because she thought I was joking. The nerve! Well, her oldest will be in the kindergarten at Rumsfeld Elementary this fall, and we will see how that goes!
Oh, you can vote for Hummus in the Cute Kid contest every day in August. I have perused the other entries and they aren’t much to speak of. I wish I could get a hold of their parents and encourage them to just give it up.
