Soccer!

I have some really terrific news; those soccer guys did not go on strike.    Today there were actual live soccer games and I bought myself a ticket to one so I could experience a little European culture.

It was quite a long drive to the game, and boy, was it ever cold out when I got there.  I decided I should get a little exercise to keep myself warm, so I walked up and down every set of steps in the stadium.  It sounds easier than it was, actually.

There were more people there than you would think.

The game itself is practically unwatchable.  The rules make about as much sense as a physics textbook, and there was practically no scoring.  What the hell was I even supposed to cheer for?  I did get a lot of exercise and then I left.

I didn’t see anyone I know.

I remember when I played soccer as a kid, it was accomplishment enough just to stay near the ball. The coach always made a point of telling me “good hustle!” At first I thought he was just being nice, but after a while, I learned that he truly appreciated a good hustle. I started to get better near the end of my soccer participation, but I never actually scored during a game. I suppose I would have bored you 😦

I scored pretty quickly in practice at least. There was one time where I actually played a pickup game of soccer with a handful of people in Dublin. It was a “couchsurfer” get together. When I tried to score, I kicked the ball with the toe of my foot, so it pretty much went a random direction. I scored all three goals of the game, and they sure looked pretty! Redemption was mine.

Brrrrr… Sounds too much like camping. Were you watching live, outdoor auditions for soccer? Because actual soccer is that TV show that people watch together in (nice, warm) bars and pubs. Which is a WIN because when the hubbies are out watching the soccer show, we girls can get a little girlfriend time in, right? I have learned that even though my husband says otherwise, the pubs that play the soccer show will let the kids come in with their dad and I have the whole evening without them, yaaaay! On weeknight shows they can bring their homework to the pub and get it done at the table, with their dad helping for a change!

That is the crazy thing Pesky. The people sitting in the cold watching the games when you watch them on TV? Actual real people! They do serve beer and there are toilets, as dirty as they are. I wouldn’t bring kids, especially if you plan to walk up and down the stairs like I did, but lots of people seem to have their own kids with them. It was a crazy experience.

That is so bizarre that people would go outside for beer and entertainment. Especially in the winter! Maybe they (not you of course) were poor or ignorant people who couldn’t afford to go to pubs with good draft beer, decent bathrooms, heat and nearby shops? Lah Lee, you really were brave, turning a bad experience into a workout, but I’d rather exercise in a classy gym where people appreciate the brands of workout gear I wear, and where I can get good spa services afterwards! I mean, you poor dear – after all that stair walking, you had to drive home all sweaty.
